Importance Of An On-Lane Analysis

The days of just picking a bowling ball from the shelf or online are long gone. Except for beginning bowlers, an On Lane Analysis is required. And here is why.
On Lane Analysis - Experienced Bowler

If you are a new customer and a league or experienced bowler, we PREFER NOT to drill a ball for you until we analyze your ball track and find your true PAP and axis of rotation. We do this by marking your PAP and having you throw your current bowling ball on the lanes until we can determine your axis shift and roll.

Only after this is done can ANYONE determine what ball and layout is best for your individual needs and be able to match the lane condition you will be bowling on.

Don't Accept Guesswork. On-lane analysis can only determine your ball track, axis migration, and PAP.

Ball Track, Pap, and Axis Shift

Most bowlers do not understand that not everyone has the same ball track, PAP, or axis shift. For example, the manufacturer's drill sheet included with every ball sold is generic. It assumes that the person buying this ball has a standard 3/4 roll with a 45-degree axis shift and a PAP of 5 inches out and 1 inch up. (Update: Lately, several manufacturers have stopped issuing drill sheets for this reason, leaving layouts strictly in the hands of the ball driller.)

About Your PAP

Only about 55% of all bowlers have an average PAP location and axis rotation. That means almost half of all axis shifts and PAPs are different. Hence, the drill patterns will not perform as described, and the ball reaction will differ from what was predicted in the layout sheet. The more the PAP location and/or axis shift differ from the average, the greater the differences.

Bad Layouts = Bad Results

Suppose you have a ball drilled without the person drilling your ball knowing your PAP location, the amount of rotation your axis travels, and your track. In that case, the ball drillers are guessing, and the odds that the ball will be drilled without having the optimal layout are higher.

I cannot tell everyone how often I have seen first-time customers bring in equipment drilled exactly the opposite of what their layout specifications called for. The bottom line is that just because someone has a drill press does not mean they know how to lay out a ball.

Head For The Door

Suppose you walk into a pro shop and they do not, or have not, done a lane analysis to determine the above criteria. In that case, I suggest you RUN out because that person is either more interested in taking your money/or doesn't understand the theory of layouts. Either way, you are spending good money on somebody's guesswork. Why take that chance?
